What a founding hire is: the person who builds the function, not just the work
A founding hire is one of the first people in a function, usually among a company's first ten employees. They join before there's a process, a playbook or a team, and they build all three.
That's what separates a founding hire from a strong senior hire. A senior engineer or seller joins a function that already works and makes it better. A founding hire starts it.
The founding roles we recruit: engineering, product and GTM
- Founding engineers. Usually the first one to five engineers. They choose the stack, ship the first versions and often help hire the engineers who come next, across full-stack, backend, AI and ML.
- Founding product designers and PMs. The first person who owns how the product looks, works and gets prioritised, side by side with the founders.
- Founding account executives. The first seller who isn't a founder. They turn founder-led sales into a repeatable process and close deals on their own.
- First GTM hires. The first marketer or growth hire, who builds the channels the company will grow on. More on GTM recruiting.
When to hire a founding engineer, designer or AE: the signs it's time
- Founding engineer: when the founders' own engineering time is what's holding back the next version, or the technical founder needs someone who can own a whole part of the product.
- Founding designer or PM: when users are arriving and decisions about what to build next are piling up on the founders.
- Founding account executive: when a founder has closed the first customers, can explain why they bought, and needs someone to do it again without them in every call.
Hiring too early costs as much as hiring too late. If we think a role can wait, we'll say so.
Founding engineer vs senior engineer: two different jobs
- Founding engineer: builds the first product and the engineering habits around it. Hands-on every day, and usually holds a meaningful equity stake.
- Senior engineer: joins a team that already works and makes it better. Owns a part of the system, not the whole thing.
- At Seed, the technical co-founder usually sets the technical direction, and the founding engineer works alongside them, hands-on every day.
Many founding engineers grow into engineering leads. As the team grows, we recruit those leads too, as we did with the Head of Engineering at Intellebox.
How we recruit founding hires: signal over resumes
Before we source anyone, we agree with you what this person must own in their first year and which signals predict they'll do it well: shipping without a spec, working directly with customers, choosing tools, hiring the next person. Then we look for people who've done that job at your stage, often as an early employee at another startup.
The best founding candidates are rarely on the market. They're happy where they are, so they have to be sourced directly. Solara OS searches beyond LinkedIn and scores each person against the signals we agreed, so you see why every name is on the list.
Speed matters, but signal matters more.
Founding offers are usually a mix of salary and meaningful equity. We benchmark each offer against what candidates at that level are seeing, so it gets taken seriously.

You work with our team, supported by Sean, the whole way. One thing we won't do is promise a time-to-hire, because every search is different. We'll tell you honestly how we'd approach the role instead.
Founding and early-stage hires we've made
We placed the founding engineer at Nexus Intelligence, a Seed-stage AI company in San Francisco. At Little Engine, a pre-seed company in Austin, we hired a senior product designer and a community growth and customer success manager.

What our clients say
"They're smart about sourcing, find great candidates, and are highly responsive. Candidates we meet say nice things about them as part of the process. We've hired several execs through them and I highly recommend."
Brandon Kessler
CEO, Devpost
"Excellent project management, very communicative and fills our pipeline with great candidates. Better results than any agency we've worked with in the past."
Dan Kosir
CEO, Slanted Frame
"We found a great hire who had a killer background. I loved the model they worked with. I just wanted to find the right person, and we did it in two weeks. It used to take months and a ton of work."

Frequently asked questions
One of a startup's first engineers, usually among the first one to five. They build the first versions of the product, make the early technical choices and often help hire the engineers who come next. The role is less about a title than about owning a part of the product from nothing.
There's no fixed level. Most founding engineers have senior-level experience, but what matters more is range: they can work across the stack, ship without a spec and talk to customers. Many have been early at another startup.
Yes. We recruit the first product designer or product manager: the person who owns how the product looks, works and gets prioritised, side by side with the founders. At Little Engine, a pre-seed company in Austin, we hired a senior product designer.
The first salesperson who isn't a founder. They take what the founders learned closing the first customers, turn it into a repeatable sales process and close deals on their own, often writing the first sales playbook along the way.
When the founders' own time is the bottleneck: on engineering, on product decisions or on sales. For a founding account executive, the usual sign is that a founder has closed the first customers and can explain why they bought. If we think a role can wait, we'll say so.
